Music Is an Ocean: Why Taking a Break Can Make You a Better Musician

by Allison Jarrell, Metro Music Makers Founder and CEO

As I sit on the beach this week listening to the waves, I find myself thinking about a newsletter I wrote last summer called Music Is an Ocean.

That newsletter was inspired by one of our longtime Metro Music Makers families, who shared those simple but powerful words with me: “Music is an ocean.” The phrase has stayed with me ever since.

Watching the tide roll in and out this week, I’ve been reminded once again just how true it is.

The ocean has a rhythm all its own. Some days it’s calm. Other days, it’s full of energy. The tide comes and goes, but it’s always there.

Music is much the same.

The Value of Slowing Down

With school only a few weeks away, these final days of summer are a wonderful opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life and enjoy a change of scenery. Whether that’s a family vacation, a week at camp, an afternoon at the park, a hike on a favorite trail, or simply spending a little extra time with the people you love, these moments have a way of giving us something we don’t always realize we need: perspective.

As musicians, it’s easy to feel like we should always be practicing or working toward the next goal. But I’ve found that taking an occasional break is just as important as the work itself.

When we return to our instruments after time away, we often come back refreshed. We hear things differently. We notice details we hadn’t before. We bring renewed energy, creativity, and appreciation to making music.

Rest isn’t the opposite of growth. Often, it’s an important part of the process.

A few days away with my family have been a welcome reminder that some of our greatest insights come when we give ourselves permission to slow down. Sometimes all it takes is a little distance to see familiar things in a new way.

A Fresh Perspective for a New School Year

That has been true for our team at Metro Music Makers as well.

As we’ve prepared for the upcoming program year, we’ve had the opportunity to look at our private lesson and music therapy programs with fresh eyes. We asked ourselves the same question that guides so much of what we do:

How can we make the experience even better for our students, families, and teachers?

As we begin rolling out those enhancements over the next few weeks, I think you’ll see that same fresh perspective reflected throughout our programs. From expanded lesson continuity options to thoughtful program improvements designed to better support each student’s unique musical journey, we’re excited for you to experience what’s ahead.

One More Summer Tradition

Before we welcome the new school year, though, we have one more summer tradition to celebrate.

Next week, we’ll wrap up camp season with Rock Band Camp: All Stars at the Spotlight Stage in North Point Mall in Alpharetta. It’s always one of my favorite weeks of the summer, and I can’t wait to watch these talented young musicians perform together, grow in confidence, and celebrate everything they’ve accomplished.

Looking Ahead

As these last days of summer unfold, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to slow down. Take the trip. Visit the park. Explore a new trail. Spend an afternoon by the water. Listen to your favorite album with the windows down. Make memories with the people who matter most.

The music will still be there when you return.

And when you do, you may just find yourself hearing it with a fresh perspective.
