Connecting Through Music: Honoring Dr. King

This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about connection and how deeply music is woven into the way we relate to one another. With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it felt like the right moment to pause and reflect on why music has always mattered so much in times of change.

Music and Connection in the Civil Rights Movement

Martin Luther King, Jr. believed deeply in bringing people together across differences. At the heart of his work was the idea that connection builds understanding, and understanding helps move us forward. Music played a powerful role in that movement.

During the Civil Rights Movement, songs were not simply something people sang. They were a source of courage, hope, and unity during moments that were anything but easy. Singing together helped people feel less alone. It helped them listen to one another. It helped them keep going.

Why Music Still Matters Today

That idea feels especially meaningful as we continue our theme of Connecting Through Music this year.

Music remains one of the most powerful ways we connect as humans. It crosses age, background, and experience. It gives voice to emotions that are difficult to express and creates shared experiences that bring people closer together.

Connection Through Music Lessons and Music Therapy

At Metro Music Makers, I see connection happen every day in small but powerful ways. It happens when a student plays alongside their teacher for the first time. When two people slow down enough to really listen to one another. When someone finds the confidence to express something through music that they cannot quite put into words yet.

Music has a way of slowing us down and opening us up. It invites us to listen more deeply to ourselves and to the people around us. It reminds us that connection does not always come from speaking louder, but often from listening more closely.

Honoring Dr. King Through Listening and Understanding

As we honor Dr. King this week, I hope we can all take a moment to notice the ways music helps us connect, build understanding, and move forward together. Whether through a shared rhythm, a song, or a quiet moment of listening, music continues to be one of the most meaningful tools we have for connection.
